Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
